TVS XL100

The 99.7cc single-cylinder air-cooled motor is now fuel-injected and BS6-compliant, producing a humble 4.4PS/6.5Nm. This is exactly the same output as its BS4 predecessor. On the upside, fuel-injection means that fuel efficiency has gone up by a claimed 15 per cent. The engine is mated to a single-speed gearbox via a centrifugal clutch, meaning that no rider input is required for the transmission. The underbone frame is suspended on a conventional telescopic fork and twin shock absorbers. The Heavy Duty variants feature slightly beefier shock absorbers more suited to carrying heavy loads, while the Comfort variant features a softer setup. Braking is handled by 110mm drum brakes at both ends along with CBS. On the BS6 versions, weight is up by 3kg to 88 and 89kg on the Comfort and Heavy Duty variants respectively.

The Heavy Duty variant is the rugged version of the duo, with beefier rear shock absorbers and a sturdier rear wheel for higher load carrying capacity. It also gets split seats and fork gaiters. It is priced at Rs 45,561. The Comfort variant has a more premium appearance with an LED DRL, and a single-piece dual-tone seat. It costs Rs 43,041. The Heavy Duty Special Edition features the same hardware as the Heavy Duty variant but with dual-tone seats and chrome inserts. This variant sells for Rs 51,400, while the Winner Edition, with chrome accents, an exclusive navy blue colour scheme and dual-tone quilted seats, is priced at Rs 53,902.

The basic design of the XL100 has remained the same for many decades now, with the same utilitarian moped look standing the test of time. The Heavy Duty variants feature a more rugged appearance with split seats and fork gaiters while the Comfort variant has a slightly more posh and urban design featuring a single seat in a dual-tone scheme.

The XL100 BS6 is reasonably well-equipped, coming with an ISG silent starter, engine kill switch, USB charger and an LED DRL. To comply with BS6 emission norms, the moped now also features fuel-injection, making it the most affordable fuel-injected two-wheeler available in India. For added convenience, TVS has thrown in a low fuel level warning light and check engine light on the cluster.

Being the only moped on sale in India the TVS XL100 has no direct competition. It goes up against affordable commuter motorcycles like the TVS Sport, Hero Splendor Plus and Bajaj CT100.
